Grace Labs opens HQ in new DeKalb Hospital space

How many lives could be saved if strokes, epilepsy and traumatic brain injuries could be predicted through a simple blood test?

Grace Laboratories, LLC, may never know the exact number, but through new research at DeKalb County-based CIS Biotech, Grace Labs, LLC is about to begin production of those blood test kits on the campus of DeKalb Medical Center, at 2675 N. Decatur Road.

GRACE Labs, LLC president Robert Rhinehart led tours of the new facility, which included the DeKalb Office of Economic Development and prominent industry executives.

We are thrilled that Grace Labs, LLC, has chosen to locate in DeKalb County were the world has come to do business, said DeKalb Chief Executive Officer Vernon Jones. Grace Labs and CIS Biotech are on the cutting edge of technology, and we welcome them to DeKalb.

The new product line detects variations in brain peptides in the blood, which provides insight into the likelihood of potentially catastrophic maladies such as strokes, epilepsy and traumatic brain injuries.

In many Third World, African, and European Block nations, access to traditional diagnostic equipment is limited or nonexistent due to the high cost associated with the procedures. For example, the cost for a traditional MRI screening starts at $1,500 and is often much more. In contrast, the GRACE Labs LLC blood tests can be conducted for under $100.

The blood tests have already passed muster overseas: the tests have CE Marking for marketing within the European Union. Grace Labs, LLC President Robert Rhinehart says approval from the Food and Drug Administration is the next hurdle. We should be able to get approval within a year, said Rhinehart.
